The Sum of Our Decisions? The extraordinary life of an ordinary woman

A talk by Dr Jo Vandepeer | Thursday 8 May 2025 | 6:00–7:15pm

History often dwells on the celebrated but the extraordinary in the ordinary lives of you and I can be overlooked. Dr Jo Vandepeer will tell a tale that pieces together the surprising life of a middle class English woman who sailed to South Australia not once but twice in the colonies first five years. Illustrated from the woman’s own scrapbook, this story has all the elements of a Victorian melodrama and gives us an insight into the precarious fortunes of the earliest European female immigrants to South Australia.

Presented as part of South Australia’s History Festival 2025.
